SOUND DESIGN - CINEMATIC
Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk is widely regarded as one of the most powerful examples of how sound can drive cinematic tension.
The film’s original soundscape created by Richard King and composer Hans Zimmer uses rhythm, texture and scale to create relentless anxiety.
CONCEPT
For this project, the goal wasn’t to improve the original. Instead, it was to explore how sound design alone can reshape the emotional experience of a scene. The aim was to experiment with how different sound choices could influence the perception of scale, danger and psychological tension.
PROCESS
Complete audio reset - all original audio and dialogue were removed to create a completely clean canvas.
New sonic direction was defined - A new conceptual sound palette was developed, focusing on heightened tension, environmental scale and evolving layers of unease.
Each sound design element was crafted individually, including:

Foley to emphasise physical movement and realism

Atmospheres to establish environment and spatial scale

Impacts and transient hits to reinforce action moments

Tension layers designed to subtly build psychological pressure
OUTCOME
Rebuilding the sound design from the ground up highlights just how influential audio is in shaping a viewer’s emotional response. By altering texture, rhythm and spatial depth, the same visual sequence can feel dramatically different, further highlighting how sound design is not simply a supporting element of film, it is a storytelling tool capable of redefining the entire experience.
